Quick answer

Davy's dungeon level resets to 1 at the start of every new dive. That is part of the game loop, not lost save data. What carries over is long-term progression: persistent upgrades raise how quickly Davy gains experience, and equipment progress persists too, so each later dive levels up faster. To level faster, invest in the mall between dives and get comfortable with combat so you survive longer in each run.

What resets and what persists

In a Gamescom interview published on September 2, 2026, the director explained level resets alongside persistent progression. The dungeon level goes back to 1 on the next dive. It is the core idea behind the game's progression. The rate at which Davy gains experience and his equipment progress are kept.

RPGamer's report on the September 2026 progression video independently describes entering at level 1 and leveling up faster over time. Two separate sources agree on the same structure. That makes it one of the best-documented systems in the game.

Why the game resets your level

GPTRACK50 calls its pacing “blazing fast growth.” The September 2026 press release explains that defeating enemies drives rapid growth during each dive. Resetting the level lets that fast growth happen again in every run.

The reset also keeps each dive meaningful. You rebuild Davy's strength quickly, make new level-up choices and adapt to the Styles the dungeon offers. The developers describe one preparation-and-dive cycle as roughly 20 to 30 minutes.

If the reset surprised you, your save is fine. It is the intended design, and the progress that matters is stored separately. The rest of this guide explains how to make the most of it.

How to level faster in later runs

The main way to level faster is long-term progression. The director explains that persistent upgrades raise how quickly Davy gains experience. Each investment makes every future dive start its growth more quickly.

Mall preparation supports this. The official progression materials connect preparation in the mall with stronger subsequent attempts. Visit the mall's services after each dive rather than diving again straight away.

Survival matters too, since defeating enemies drives growth during a dive. The longer Davy survives, the more he can grow in that run. Our beginner tips cover the combat basics that keep him alive.

Defeating enemies is what drives growth during a dive, according to the official progression materials. Avoiding fights may feel safer, but it slows Davy's growth in that run. Balance risk against the experience you need.

Level-up choices inside a dive

At certain level-up points, the game offers a choice of three options. RPGamer's report describes this as part of the progression loop. The choices you make shape the rest of the run.

Bessie Burger in the mall improves the rarity of those options over time. That means mall upgrades raise the quality of future level-ups, not just their speed. It is a good reason to keep investing in Bessie.

We have not verified which level-up points offer choices, or the full list of options. Our skills guide explains how level-up choices relate to Style skills and Zombie Skills. Both systems feed into the same build decisions.

A typical run, step by step

The steps below summarize the documented loop. They describe structure, not a route through a specific dungeon. Dungeon layers branch, so your own runs will differ.

Repeat the cycle and your persistent progress makes each dive grow faster. The developers describe one cycle as roughly 20 to 30 minutes. Over many cycles, those runs build toward the main story's estimated 20 to 30 hours.

  • Prepare in the mall: use Bessie Burger and Ink on the Brain.
  • Dive at level 1: defeat enemies to grow quickly.
  • Choose at level-ups: pick one of three options when they appear.
  • Devour cores: use Style Eat to take on monster forms.
  • Return: bring back resources such as monster parts and prepare again.

Mall services that support leveling

Bessie Burger unlocks Zombie Skills and improves level-up rarity. Monster parts gathered in the dungeon are a resource for Bessie, according to the progression press release. Bringing parts back is part of leveling efficiently.

The Ink on the Brain shop handles OT Gear and Body Hack. Equipment progress persists between dives, and Body Hack gear keeps working across Style transformations. Stronger gear helps Davy survive the early part of each dive.

Exact costs were not documented in the sources we checked. Our upgrades guide maps every verified service. It also explains how mall progress differs from the dive level.

Combat habits that help you grow

Davy has no conventional dodge roll or guard. The developers describe the Stupid Parry as his defensive tool, and note that it can still cause damage. Learning it early prevents many failed dives.

Hands-on coverage describes biting enemies to recover health. That ties healing to staying aggressive. Combined with Style Eat, it keeps Davy fighting and growing through a dive.

The developers say no single Style suits every situation. Switching forms to suit the encounter helps you defeat enemies efficiently. Our Styles guide lists all eleven forms. Different forms serve different combat roles, so swapping is part of fighting well.

What we do not know yet

No verified level cap, experience table or fastest farming route was established in the sources we checked. We have not invented any of them. Claims about exploits or best grinding spots should be treated with caution.

Developer interviews describe the system, not final balance. We will check how leveling feels in the released game after October 21, 2026. Updates to this page will carry a date.

If you find reliable leveling data after launch, you can send it through our contact page. Please include your platform and game version. We review every correction against the game itself.

Leveling in the First Bite Demo

The free First Bite Demo covers approximately the first two hours of the full game. It introduces the mall along with basic actions, Bite, Style Eat, Body Hack and Davy Burst. That is enough to experience the level reset and the mall loop.

Demo save data can carry into the full game. Progress you make in the trial therefore continues after launch. Transfers between different platforms have not been confirmed.

See our demo guide for download links. The how long to beat page explains how dive length relates to the campaign. Both pages show when their information was checked.
